By maritimemag April 8, 2021 ShareTweet 0 Segun Oladipupo | The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) said it has deployed the recently recruited Water Guard Officers to various jetties and terminals within the State inland Waterways. In a release by the agency, the General Manager of LASWA, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, said the newly employed officers are to boost the Operational outreach of the Agency. ” They have been deployed to jetties where there are inadequate personnel and areas with no LASWA presence” the agency declared. The new Water Guards, who have undergone various training on Basic Waterways Safety Rules, Jetty Operational Procedures, Conflict Resolution, and CPR, were to ensure adequate Safety compliance by Boat Operators and Ferry Passengers in the waterways and at jetties. Some of the Jetties with the new Water Guards are Odo Agemo jetty in Egan Igando area, Isashi jetty off iyana school, Ojo- iyana Iba, Mile 2 Ferry Terminal near Mile 2 Bus stop, Imore jetty off Alakija Bus stop also in Mile-2, as well as Ebute Chief in Epe among Others. LASWA, with 37 available jetties and terminals, now has a total of 108 Water Guards, among whom are seven female. Following the International Women’s Day mandate ” Choose to Challenge,” LASWA has challenged the stereotypical gender bias of only having male water guards. ” This shows that LASWA, as a forward-moving agency that plans to achieve gender equality in the workplace” The GM affirms that the additional officers will enable the Agency to improve on her safety checks at the jetties with adequate waterways monitoring.
