UNHCR trains immigration officers to register IDPs, refugees

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has trained Nigerian immigration officers to register Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and returning refugees for their national ID cards.

About 30, 000 cards have already been printed for the registration exercise in camps and host communities in Borno State.

The issuance of cards was contained in a UN agency’s Situation Report of September 2018, released at the weekend in Maiduguri.

“The immigration officers will be deployed to Pulka, a border village, to assist with registering spontaneous refugee returnees arriving from Cameroon,” said the report.

On implementation of registration exercise, the report said: “UNHCR is working with Nigerian authorities to print and distribute 100,000 national ID cards to IDPs and refugee returnees.

On access to Justice, the report said: “In Maiduguri, two mobile courts have been established in Bakassi and Gubio Road IDP camps.

This is to enable persons of concern and returning refugees have access to justice. According to the report, more than 250 cases have been heard and determined since start of the year
