By maritimemag July 31, 2019 ShareTweet 0 Tayo Oladipupo | The Federal Ministry of Transportation has invited the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria for a meeting on Wednesday in Abuja over the lingering face off between the union and the International Oil Companies (iOCs) Recall that the union had embarked on a three day strike,which was later called off, for failure of the stevedoring contracting firms to pay the dock Workers their wages. The refusal of the IOCs to comply with the payment has allegedly lingered for about one year now. The Nigerian Ports Authority last week suspended the operations of the IOCs in connection with the development. But in effort to avert the fresh strike planned by the union which is referred to as mother of all strikes, the ministry has invited the leadership of the union to its Abuja office to find a lasting solutiin to the issue. A letter of invitation signed by S U Galandichi, Director, Maritime Service for the Permanent Secretary of the ministry sent to the union and sighted by our correspondent read, “Sequel to the two weeks ultimatum given by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria to embark on a strike as a result of failure of stevedoring contractors firms to pay their workers, there is an urgent need to address the lingering issue. “Accordingly, I am direct to invite you for a meeting to discuss and find lasting solution to the issue. © 2019, maritimemag.
