NIWA boss unveils water ambulance, identifies non compliance to regulatory code as major causes of accidents

The managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Senator Adeleke Mamora, has identified non compliance to NIWA regulatory codes as the major causes of water accidents in the country

Speaking during the unveiling of its water ambulance in Lagos on Monday, December 17 to help passengers during emergencies on the waterways, Senator Mamora, observed that the water ambulance becomes necessary because accident will always happen, but that the readiness and quick response in such situation situation matters a lot.

NIWA boss stressed the need for more awareness, more sensitization across the country on need for passengers to always wear life jackets, on the dangers of overloading and others to avoid water accidents.

He observed that there are even fake life jackets that will not guarantee the safety of the passengers, adding that the operators must ensure the usage of NIWA certified Life Jackets.
Senator Mamora also emphasised the need for manifest for passengers to know who and who is on the boat at the time of take-off.

He promised that NIWA will get more of the ambulances to respond quickly during emergencies.

NIWA boss acknowledged that though there is the issue of the shortage of manpower, logistics and others, the Authority shall continue to do its best in the oversight of the water transportation to ensure the safety of passengers.
He advised passengers and other users of the waterways to always strive to own safety at all times.

Speaking also, the area general manager of NIWA, Mr Sambo Muazu pledged to continue to partner with the stakeholders in promoting safe water transportation.
He lauded the support of the media, the president of Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria and the United Waterways Association for always being a worthy partner in safe water transportation business in the zone.
