The security agency also stated they will continue to step up the fight against criminality and insecurity as directed by the Chief of Naval Staff. This was made known during a raid by the Forward Operating Base (FOB) of the Nigerian Navy at Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State where they arrested 24 suspects and made a seizure of 1,831 bags of smuggled rice. According to the statement issued by the Command, “the command would remain steadfast in fighting criminals on the Nigeria territorial waters according to the directive of the Chief of Naval Staff”. The Commanding Officer, FOB, Captain Peter Yilme, on Sunday explained that 5 wooden boats used in smuggling the rice from the Republic of Cameroon, were also seized and added the arrests were made during routine operations by operatives in the last one month. Yilme, while handing over the suspects and items to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), pointed out the 2 suspects claimed they were not told that they were to ferry rice from Cameroon to Nigeria. One of the suspects stressed that it was when the rice was loaded into the boat that he realised that he would not be conveying fish as he was earlier told. © 2019, maritimemag. All rights reserved.
