The Chairman, Association of Maritime Trucks Owners (AMATO) Chief Remi Ogungbemi has described the hostile maritime as deadlier than the #COVID-19 pandemic.

In a chat with our correspondent in Lagos,  the AMATO chairman said the port environment is not friendly,  adding that truckers are at higher risk due to the hostile industry environment as compared to the pandemic.

He disclosed that the association has adhered to the social distancing instruction of the Federal government, by directing its members who have no business to do at the port to stay at home.

He urged the government to remove several bottlenecks inhibiting the flow of trade at the port.

Ogungbemi also decried multiple guidelines issued by the presidential task team, stating that the Nigerian Port Authority (NPA) being the technical regulator of the port should be the one issuing guidelines for truck owners and drivers.
He said the guidelines have to be spelt out so as to avoid confrontation that might occur.

“The challenges we are passing through are deadlier than the Coronavirus. The working environment is hostile and not friendly.

“Because what the truck drivers are being sanitized with everyday is more powerful than the hand sanitizer that we are using against COVID-19.

“Drivers are being sanitized with so many heat left and right which is more dangerous than the Coronavirus we are talking about.

However, we have obeyed the instructions from the authority, we have asked our members to maintain distance in social gathering.

“We have instructed them to stay at home except they have essential services to provide especially when they have their delivery order that will enable you to go to the port.

“We know NPA is the technical regulator of the port, there is no how a servant can serve two masters.

“Issuing another guideline by which we will use to access the port has to be spelt out so that there would be no confrontation.”
