These are period when there are challenges of influx of water hyacinth, torrential downpour, rise in tidal level, poor visibility due to fog in harmattan, among other things. Nkechi Ajayi, LASWA Public Relations Officer, in a statement on Friday, said the programme is set to kick start a massive safety awareness campaign at all major jetties and terminal in the state in order to sensitise ferry passengers and arouse their safety consciousness. The sensitisation, which started on Thursday,15th of October 2020, will see LASWA officials and other safety volunteers at all jetties and coastal communities to admonish, educate and enlighten ferry passengers alongside boat Operators on issues bothering on their safety. Safety fliers, awareness stickers and waterways safety booklets containing relevant information and warning against night travels, overloading, reckless driving or violation of life jackets rules and other souvenirs would be distributed at every events. 500 standard life jackets for both adults and children would also be donated to boat operators and commuters at the jetties free of charge. A major event to round up the first phase of the sensitization programme along the Badagry axis would be coming up on the 18th of October 2020 with a stakeholders’ engagement forum at the Badagry town hall. © 2020, maritimemag.
