The Federal Government has been called upon to provide amenities in oil-producing communities to improve the lives of the poor and vulnerable.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Enugu campus, Prof Edith Nwosu, made the call on Friday at the 2019 fellowship induction of the Nigeria Institution of Surveyors in Owerri, Imo State.

In her lecture titled, “Promoting Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria through Social Protection Floor,” Nwosu posited that it was necessary for the FG to focus on oil-producing communities.

She said, “The concern should act as a palliative measure to the communities to sustain, among other things, environmental degradation in the areas.”

The lecturer urged the private sector to collaborate with the FG to promote sustainable development.

The president of the institution, Mr Alabo Charles, advised members of the institution to focus on activities that would boost the profession.

Charles added, “This institution has come to stay and it is our respective duty to ensure that it lives on. We shall ensure that none of our activities should be inimical to the growth and development of the institution.”

The Board Chairman of the fellows of the institution, Dr Bosun Ayinde, said the five inducted fellows had dedicated their careers to the growth and development of the institution.

Ayinde said, “As fellows, we have the opportunity to change the horizon. We are obligated to be the leaders. You are among those, who elevate the profession through our vision to support the growth and development of the institution both financially and through the donation of our time and expertise.”
