Compel employers to pay new minimum wage, union tells FG.

The Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association (NMNOWTSSA) has called on the Federal Government to mandate employers of labour to implement the new minimum wage for workers.

Comrade Bob Yousou, National President of the union, made the call in his Independence Day celebration speech on Thursday.

The Union boss decried the below average life of Seafarers and other workers in Nigeria.

According to him, the cost of governance in the country needs to be reviewed by the current administration, pointing out that money expended on  both legislature and executive arms of government should be reduced.

According to him, the current administration should use the jubilee celebration to look inward and address issues faced by the common man who are unhappy with the meagre take home packages by employers.

The labour leader also called on ship owners and manning agents to engage the services  of experienced and competent Nigerian seafarers against their foreign counterparts, adding that the Cabotage Act must not be neglected .

He called on Nigerians to be security conscious while celebrating the nation’s 60 years anniversary, he urged the public to maintain physical distancing and use of nose masks.

“We must work together to ensure that the workforce gets the deserved welfare packages and remuneration from our various employers”.
