By maritimemag July 8, 2019 ShareTweet 0 Tayo Oladipupo The Maritime workers’ Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has threatened to take industrial action against shipping companies, Chevron and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) over alleged poor condition of service for workers. The President, Seafarers branch of the Union, Comrade Francis Bunu made the declaration in Lagos, recently at the branch secretariat while addressing members of the union over the nationwide strike held last week.. Recall that the union had shut the ports nationwide last week from Wednesday to Friday before the intervention of the ministries of Transportation, Labour & Productivity which led to its tentative suspension. Finance experts had estimated that the three days strike action led to loss of over N130 billion accruable to government coffers. Bunu stated that the oil companies and government agencies and other stakeholders involved in marine business have refused to honour the meetings called by the union for negotiations of workers welfare. He added that failure to heed the call for a negotiation to might force the union into adopting industrial action in order to get their attention. He said, “We are also extending this to other people like Chevron, we are knocking at their door, calling them, begging them just to have a meeting with MWUN because of their poor condition of service they have been giving o Nigerians “If the FG knows what it is losing in both manpower and finance for the things the shipping companies are doing to this outcry, FG will lament. “So we are begging Chevron, NIMASA and every other stakeholder who are involved in this marine business to put their house in order after now one after the other MWUN will come after them to do the right thing for the industry. He stated further that the union would not treat any issue of workers with kids gloves anymore. © 2019, maritimemag. All rights reserved.
