News 315 illegal migrants intercepted at Mediterranean Sea By maritimemag November 9, 2018 ShareTweet 0 315 migrants trying to reach Europe in three inflatable boats were picked up in the Mediterranean Sea by the Libyan Coast Guard on Wednesday. Navy spokesman Ayoub Qasim said, the migrants, who included 275 men, 32 women and eight children from different sub-Saharan and Arab countries, were moved to detention canters. “In one incident, the country’s coastguard intercepted a rubber boat carrying 116 people off the town of Zawiya, west of the capital Tripoli,’’ Qasim said. Qasim said another 199 people were rescued from two boats off Tripoli. He said one boat started sinking and four of the migrants had fallen into the sea when the coastguard rescued them. In recent months, the Libyan coastguard had reported intercepting various vessels carrying hundreds of migrants heading for Europe via the Mediterranean Sea. Libya descended into chaos following the 2011 revolt that toppled long-time dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The North African country has since emerged as a gateway to Europe for people fleeing war, persecution and poverty in their homelands. © 2018, maritimemag. All rights reserved.
