President General of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) Comrade Adeyanju has said that the era of thuggery and industrial actions among Nigerian dockworkers is a thing of the past, even as he assured that the union now applies scientific approach in tackling challenges.

Comrade Adeyanju stated this recently at the Branch Working Committee meeting of the union which held in Apapa, Lagos.

He said that the union now engages more in dialogue with her employers who are mostly terminal operators and stevedoring companies.

He revealed that the collective bargaining agreement signed last year with National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) have removed all responsibilities from the stevedoring contractors and given it back to the master stevedore which is the terminal operators.

According to him, terminal operators now take care of dockworkers pension, terminal benefits and gratuity.  Speaking, he said “The era of thuggery is a thing of the past among dockworkers.
The era of banging tables and insulting our employers is not there anymore”

“The unemployment going on in the port is as a result of the bad road where some of the investors have relocated to foreign countries like Ghana and this is affecting the dockworkers”

“We want to appeal to the federal government who have awarded the road to Dangote Nigeria Limited to expedite action on this road and make sure that the Mile 2, Tin Can Island is well accessible for port users”
