Freight forwarder wants Buhari to replace Alli with trained Customs officer as CG

A critical stakeholder in the freight forwarding subsector of the Nigerian Maritime industry, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to choose a career Customs officer to head the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in the next dispensation.

The call is coming as the President is to commence his second term in office on 29th May, 2019.

The Apapa chapter chairman of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Dom Onyeka made the call recently while speaking with our correspondent on phone.

He said the revenue generation of the Service would have improved better than what obtains now had the President chosen someone who grew through the ranks and has knowledge of the organisation.

He added that even though the present Comptroller General of Customs, Col. Hameed Alli later had knowledge of the Service, he was only told what the lieutenants wanted him to know, saying the vital secrets were hidden from him.

He said, “Buhari should not retain Hameed Alli as the CG of Customs.

He said an officer who passed through the ranks and file will do better because he has the knowledge of the system and not someone who will rely on what he is  being told by the officers.

“I want the President to choose a career Customs officer who passed through requisite trainings in the Service.

Speaking further, Onyeka maintained that the practice of other paramilitary outfits where professionals are made the Head of the organisations should also be the practice in Customs.

According to him, making a trained person the Head of Customs would enable the Service to block avenues where revenues are leaking because they have professional knowledge of all the sections of the Service.
