The Banner was alongside the pier, and she was loaded with 2,000 used cars that were bound for the Libyan market, according to local media. Officials believed that the fire started in one of the vehicles and spread. The vessel’s 28 crew safely evacuated onto the pier, and no casualties have been reported. Firefighting proceeded on the exterior of the vessel, with water-side support from a large Korean Coast Guard cutter and air support from a firefighting helicopter. The 1988-built Auto Banner is a 52,000 dwt car carrier owned in South Korea.
